Writer’s Guidelines

PHILOSOPHY: Vibrant Life is a bimonthly lifestyle magazine that promotes physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual balance from a practical, Christian perspective.

STYLE: Vibrant Life focuses on the typical adult man or woman and family. Articles should be written in an informal, interesting, easy-to-read style, avoiding hard-to-understand medical jargon. We stress readability and prefer the person-oriented approach that answers the question: What can this information do for me? How can it help me or my family live a healthier, happier, or more satisfying life?

SUBMISSIONS: Submit completed articles ready for publication. Be sure to include your mailing address, phone number, Social Security number, email address (if applicable), and the rights you are offering.

MANUSCRIPTS: Articles should focus on one topic and stay with that subject to the end. Short articles (450 to 650 words) are always in demand. Feature articles should not exceed 1,000 words and, if the article is informational, should include at least one sidebar (helpful tips, steps to take to accomplish a goal, and additional resource information, etc.)

Please send either original manuscripts or good, clear copies of your original. (For your own protection against mail loss, you should keep a copy of what you send.) Electronic submissions are permissible with Microsoft Word being the preferred word-processing format.

If you wish to have your hardcopy article returned following evaluation, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (bearing adequate postage) large enough for the return of your manuscript if it’s not accepted. Articles without a SASE will not be returned.

RELIABILITY: Information must be reliable——no faddism. Articles should represent the latest findings on the subject, and if scientific in nature, should be properly documented. (References to other lay journals are generally not acceptable.)

If your manuscript contains material that needs footnote documentation–statistics, quotes, findings from studies, etc.–we prefer that the reference be included in the body of the text (i.e., in parenthesis, not as a footnote). We encourage authors to supply additional footnotes for editorial verification of nutritional facts and other scientific information. Also, make a photocopy of the original page or source material containing the information you’re including.

PAYMENT: Payment is made upon acceptance of your article and is based on quality of expression, accurate use of up-to-date research findings, depth, and relevance of content. Payment for articles ranges from $100 to $300. We purchase first Vibrant Life world serial rights along with Vibrant Life reprint rights when we accept your article. We also purchase the right to post your article on our Internet site.

PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ARTICLES: We will look at previously published articles if the writer has sold only one-time rights or has written permission to sell the article elsewhere without a reprint credit. We pay less for reprint rights to previously published articles than we pay for first world serial rights to unpublished articles.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Only photos that illustrate a submitted article will be considered. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of prints/slides/CDs. Do NOT send pictures via email unless instructed to do so. Please indicate if photos are available with your submissions, and we’ll contact you if we need them.

NOTE: The earliest any article will appear in our magazine is within six months; longer than that is generally the rule. The author receives three complimentary copies of a published article. If you have a change of address before your article is published, please notify us so that you’ll be sure to receive your complimentary copies.

What Types of Articles Do We Want?

Vibrant Life needs practical articles that stress prevention while promoting improved physical health, increased mental clarity, and a sustained spiritual balance in the everyday life of the reader. We especially like features on the latest breakthroughs in medicine, health, nutrition, and exercise; interviews with leading personalities on health topics; and seasonal, health-related material written in a readable style that appeals to the typical man or woman. Articles presenting a happy, healthy outlook are welcome. We prefer articles that take a positive, holistic approach to a topic and emphasize reader benefits.

Specific Areas of Interest:

HEALTH: All aspects of health——physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual; well-researched pieces relying on quotes from authorities in the field under discussion unless written by an authority (i.e., doctor, registered dietitian, etc.).

EXERCISE: Practical advice applicable to the typical man or woman today who wants to add exercise to his/her lifestyle or incorporate fitness within the family unit; outdoor, indoor, on-the-job, or on-the-road.

NUTRITION: Vibrant Life promotes the VEGAN lifestyle (no animal products whatsoever). Articles showing the reader how to achieve better nutrition, eat less junk food, and enjoy more healthful meals are welcome. Featured foods should also be low in sugar content.

SELF-HELP: Self-improvement articles——looking, doing, and being your best including personality improvement, increasing job performance, avoiding burnout, and overcoming unhealthful habits.

FAMILY: Practical articles and human-interest stories dealing with the establishment and maintenance of strong, healthy family relationships; coping with stress and crisis within the family such as chronic illness or disability, depression, drugs, death; child-rearing tips that relate to the development of a healthy lifestyle. We occasionally print articles focusing on the unique challenges faced by today’s singles.

SPIRITUAL BALANCE: Practical, highly focused articles that show how to utilize the power of faith, prayer, and belief in God to bring health and vitality into the life. We’re always looking for tips on how to apply Biblical principles of health to help overcome destructive habits and lead a more satisfying life (no miracle stories). Manuscripts that clearly explain the dynamic relationship between God and man–how each carries certain responsibilities to the other–will receive careful attention.

CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS: Stories——in a health context——of real people who have passed through a crisis in their life to victory because of their strong faith in God. Publication-quality photos of the article’s featured person will be required if this type of story is accepted.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Caring for the earth; protecting its resources; living life in harmony with the natural world; reducing our footprint on the planet; recycling; cleaning the air, water, soil. Provide tips and helpful hints for making this world a better place in which to live.

INFORMATIONAL: Home and family safety, current health trends, consumer-oriented pieces (rating or reviewing various product categories is always welcome), new research in the medical/health field, proven preventive measures, etc.

INTERVIEWS AND PROFILES: Suggested subjects: doctors, health experts, popular athletes or celebrities who demonstrate an all-around healthy lifestyle.
